Learning & Teaching

Learning at San Damiano College

Learning at San Damiano College is grounded in a learner‑centred model of pedagogy, where every student is known, valued and supported to grow academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Inspired by the Franciscan charism and guided by Gospel values, learning places the learner at the heart of all teaching and decision‑making.

Teaching at San Damiano College is intentional and evidence‑informed, drawing on contemporary research and high‑impact practices to support how students learn best. Learning experiences are purposefully designed to build understanding, activate prior knowledge and engage students through explicit teaching, guided practice and meaningful learning opportunities.

Teachers continually evaluate and respond to student learning through data, feedback and professional reflection. This responsive approach allows instruction to be adjusted to meet individual needs, promoting excellence, equity and inclusion for all learners. Learning is both challenging and accessible, supporting students to achieve their personal best.

Learning is further strengthened through a strong professional learning community, where staff collaborate, reflect on practice and pursue continual improvement. Through this shared commitment, students are supported to become resilient learners, critical thinkers and active contributors, prepared to learn with purpose and live out Gospel values in the world.

Teaching for Thinking

At San Damiano College, Teaching for Thinking reflects our commitment to forming young people who are thoughtful, reflective and engaged learners. Drawing on the research‑informed Teaching for Thinking pedagogy developed through The University of Queensland, this approach places purposeful thinking, inquiry and deep understanding at the heart of teaching and learning.

Through Teaching for Thinking, learning experiences are intentionally designed to develop students’ ability to question, reason, analyse, problem‑solve and reflect on their thinking. Students are encouraged to think deeply, make connections across learning areas and engage respectfully with diverse perspectives, supporting both academic growth and personal formation.

In today’s world, students need more than knowledge alone. They require the skills and dispositions to navigate complexity, collaborate with others and adapt to change. By embedding Teaching for Thinking into our classrooms, San Damiano College supports students to become independent, capable learners who take ownership of their learning, enact higher‑order thinking skills and apply their understanding in meaningful and authentic ways.

Teaching for Thinking aligns strongly with Brisbane Catholic Education priorities and reflects our Franciscan values of community, respect, resilience and service. Through this approach, students are supported to engage thoughtfully, think ethically and act with compassion preparing them not only for academic success, but for life beyond the classroom.

By embedding Teaching for Thinking across the curriculum, San Damiano College forms discerning, articulate and ethical thinkers, equipped with the knowledge, skills and values needed to contribute positively in a rapidly changing world and to live out our motto:
We are one in love.
